The Boy Who Lived || First Birthday Celebration

I can’t believe I am sitting here writing about our sons 1st birthday party.
I will have to make another post about the last couple of years and how we got here, but the short version is:
Our sweet Tommy was born at 22 weeks and 3 days and was in the NICU for 140 days.
The odds were against him but he truly is the boy who lived.

Fast forward to November 3rd, 2018. I came across a Pinterest post about the boy who lived! I am a huge Harry Potter fan and seriously it just kind of clicked for me to do a HP birthday theme.
I wanted to share all the details with you so that if you’re planning on hosting a Harry Potter birthday or even baby shower, hopefully these will give you some great ideas to start off with. It was hard to not add/do all the things so set a budget and stick with it!

We hired a photographer friend to capture our day so all these photos are by Sarah Brown Images .
She did a wonderful job and I’m so excited to share these photos with you.

I ordered Hogwarts tickets as invitations on Etsy (Printable Time Etsy Shop)
and printed them off on glossy cardstock at FedEx.
They were a hit! So of course when I saw the 9 3/4 Hogwarts Express
free printable from Eva Design Studio I had to print it out for our door.
Really cute way to greet our guests.

What’s a Harry Potter party without magic wands?
I found this really cute Etsy shop (see a theme here? ETSY IS MY JAM)
and purchased these wands from them.
They’re only $1 each and I only needed 10. I was going to make my own,
but saved me so much time and money! We got the wands from Planet Nerd World.

Another Etsy find! I was searching everywhere for a poster sized backdrop
and this Etsy shop allows you to customize your own Daily Prophet.
Perfectionate is the Etsy shop I ordered from.
I wanted it pretty big for a backdrop and if you print it on engineer paper, it is so cheap to do.
This size printable cost me $4.90 at FedEx.

Our Honeydukes candy + snack bar! Super fun and easy to set up.
All the bowls, napkins, and plates I got at the dollar store.

Ok, so my husband is very “frugal” with money so I couldn’t overdo it
on a dreamy fondant cake so I went to Market Street and picked up this “naked”
looking cake for $19.99 (just a plain 8″ round, double layer cake).
Originally I wanted the cake to be COVERED in frosting,
but the MS I went to only had this at the time I went so I had to settle.
I ordered a HP Funko Pop off Amazon, found the candles at Party City and viola! our cake!
It came out cute and that’s all that mattered.

I printed a bunch of these proclamation educational decrees
from my personal printer for a simple backdrop in the front
of the house to take photos in front of.

And of course, had to make this photo prop! There are a lot of DIY tutorials, but I found mine here
HAVE YOU SEEN THIS WIZARD DIY
All you need is a foam board (Dollar Tree), glue, prints, black cardstock, and an exacto knife.
That’s it! If I can do it, you can do it!

I set this space up for our guests to see how small Tommy
actually was and the little diapers he started in at the NICU.
That little sock baby with the binky I made during my NICU stay
and it weighs your babies birth weight.
So all our guests got to hold it and see
how small he was when he was born.

For my birthday probably 4 or 5 years ago, I asked my family to buy me the Harry Potter hardbook collection from Amazon and it comes in this chest. It’s really awesome.
I never opened it in hopes because I wanted to save it for when Ellie and I could read it together.
But for this party, I decided to open the chest and
I wanted all the guests to sign the first Harry Potter book and write a little message to Tommy.
I can’t wait for him to read it later. He is so loved.

I thought it be a good idea to do a craft since we would have some older kids at the party. And I found this idea from THE SWEETER SIDE OF MOMMYHOOD BLOG. We made DRAGON snow globes!
They didn’t turn out the way I hoped, but it was still fun doing it with the kids!

I feel like this caption should be, “Am I doing this right?” HAHA!

CAKE TIME!

Happiest birthday to our sweet pea!

Can you tell he L O V E D his cake?

Y’all~~~~ First time eating cake and he DEMOLISHED it!!!

Big sis helped. Here we are opening our gifts from our friends.

Last but not least…
We asked Sarah to do a photoshoot of Tommy so here are a few shots
from that as well as a family photo of the four of us. I am so happy at how they turned out.

Seriously… the happiest baby I know. After all that he has been through.
God gave me this sweet child who is filled with joy and happiness.

Ok, so remember how I said the Harry Potter books came in a chest type thing?
Tommy is actually sitting in it in this photo. He fit perfectly.

Big SIS, ELLIE! She was so excited to celebrate her little brother’s first birthday. We didn’t throw her a party this year and I know she was a little sad about it, but we tried to make up for it in other ways. Her heart is pure gold and she is the sweetest big sister!

I can’t even with this photo. If y’all knew my husband,
you’d know he is not that sentimental and not that touchy feely kind of guy.
But this makes my heart melt seeing my two boys loving on each other.

And that’s all, folks!
Thanks for checking out our babies first birthday bash!
I had a blast planning it and staying within budget. HAHA!

Please feel free to email me sarahkilcreativestudio@gmail.com or comment below if you have
any questions about the party! I’m happy to help.

  1. Thank you for your wonderful ideas!! I am using them as inspiration. My son was in the NICU for 97 days (born at 27 weeks). I was thinking this theme would be perfect for his first birthday too!!
